Malayalam stalwart Mohanlal had three releases in this year alone, with Hridayapoorvam being his latest release. This critically acclaimed film’s Telugu version was released on Jio Hotstar yesterday. Check out our review to know how the movie is.
Story:
Sandeep Balakrishnan (Mohanlal) is a most eligible simple man who runs a small food business. He has to undergo a heart transplant when his health deteriorates. The heart is transplanted by an Indian Army colonel from Pune, Ravindranath. Zari (Sangeet Pratap) is appointed by the doctors as Sandeep’s caretaker. How does their bond evolve? The colonel’s daughter, Haritha (Malavika Mohanan), invites Mohanlal to Pune, as it was her father’s last wish. She lives with her mother, Devika (Sangita Madhavan Nair). Does Sandeep get married in the end? Watch the movie to know the rest of the story.
Plus Points:
Hridayapoorvam is yet another simple and heartwarming family drama from the Malayalam film industry. The director explores a simple plot without leaving the audiences bored at any point with his engaging narrative. The story, which starts off interestingly, journeys through a few familiar moments but generates decent humor. Mohanlal once again portrays a subtle role with aplomb. His mannerisms add authenticity to his portrayal. Premalu actor Sangeeth Pratap impresses with his comedic timing. Actress Malavika Mohanan gets a meaty role. She looks quite natural, and her scenes with Mohanlal have come out well. Sangita Madhavan, who plays Malavika’s mother, grabs everyone’s attention with her looks and performance.
The short tracks between Mohanlal, Malavika, and Sangita generated good entertainment in the second half. Apart from the lighthearted narrative, the film holds its strength with the presence of heartwarming emotions. The cameos of Meera Jasmine and Basil Joseph will offer a pleasant surprise.
Minus Points:
After watching two mass and powerful movies from Mohanlal this year, Hridayapoorvam feels like a routine drama with a slow narrative. The movie often appears routine with simplistic moments. Like most Malayalam movies, Hridayapoorvam too doesn’t feature any striking plot twists or fast-paced narrative.
It would have been better if Premala actor Sangeeth Pratap had been offered a full-fledged character. His character should have been comedic to generate humor in the narrative, but the makers missed it.
Although the track between Mohanlal, Malavika, and Sangita is a bit entertaining, it also appears a bit dull. Justin Prabhakaran’s songs did not leave much impact. They should have been removed or used as montages to make the story conclude a little sooner.
Technical Aspects:
Hridayapoorvam is made with decent production values. The production design has been impressively done according to the backdrop. Justin Prabhakaran’s music is good, while Anu Moothedutt’s cinematography is decent. Rajagopal’s editing is decent, but some scenes should have been trimmed for a crisp narrative. The Telugu dubbing is decent. Sathyan Anthikad’s direction is good. He has handled a routine story as a regular drama but without much boredom.
Verdict:
Overall, Hridayapoorvam is a simple, neat, fun, and emotional drama. As always, Mohanlal is totally immersed in his role. Actress Sangita has succeeded in coming up with an impressive performance. Justin Prabhakaran’s music captivates the audience. Watch this movie without many expectations, and you will be impressed with its occasional decent moments.
