Over the years, maverick director Ram Gopal Varma has mostly restricted himself to crime and political dramas. In the initial days of his career, RGV made movies in various genres, including romance (Rangeela) and devotional drama (Govinda Govinda). However, RGV has vowed to never make a devotional film.

In a latest interview, talking about Ranbir Kapoor and Sai Pallavi’s highly-anticipated pan-India devotional film, Ramayan, RGV said that he had decided to never make a devotional film as such films attract too many unnecessary controversies. He said that audiences watched late NT Ramarao’s devotional movies with a lot of reverence and excitement. But these days, people are watching devotional movies only with devotion and no excitement.

RGV continued saying that religious heads will call for a boycott if devotional movies land in controversies. Talking about Ramayan, RGV said that it requires a lot of guts to make a devotional movie of such a massive scale in these times. He also wished the Ramayan makers the best.
