Many may not yet be familiar with the Tamil film Bad Girl, starring Anjali Sivaraman, best known for her role in Cobalt Blue. Directed by Varsha Bharath, the film is produced by Vetri Maaran and Anurag Kashyap.
The teaser for Bad Girl was recently released ahead of its premiere at the International Film Festival Rotterdam on January 31, 2025. However, it quickly sparked controversy, with many accusing the film of misrepresenting a Brahmin girl who seeks to live life on her own terms, including in intimate matters.
The teaser has divided netizens. Some questioned why there was no similar backlash when films like Arjun Reddy, Kabir Singh, and Animal were released, while others defended the film’s portrayal.
Director Mohan G. criticized Vetri Maaran and Anurag Kashyap for depicting a Brahmin girl negatively, while figures like Pa Ranjith and Dhanush have expressed support for the film.
While the controversy’s future remains uncertain, Bad Girl, which was previously unknown to many, has gained considerable attention thanks to the teaser, generating free publicity and trending online.
The theatrical release date has yet to be announced. The film also stars Shanthi Priya, Saranya Ravichandran, Hridhu Haroon, TeeJay Arunasalam, and Sashank Bommireddipalli in key roles. Vetri Maaran produced the film, with music composed by Amit Trivedi.
