In a long-awaited move, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced a new Oscar category: Achievement in Stunt Design. Debuting at the 100th Academy Awards in 2028, the category will recognise the creativity and skill behind the stunt work that defines many of cinema’s most thrilling moments.
Starting with films released in 2027, the award will honor exceptional stunt coordination and choreography – from complex fight scenes to high-speed chases and daring stunts. Though stunt professionals have long elevated action on screen, their contributions have gone largely unrecognised, until now.
The industry has welcomed the news, especially the teams behind action-heavy films like John Wick and RRR, which have long pushed for this recognition. While voting details have yet to be announced, the move marks a major step in celebrating the full range of cinematic craft.
