SS Rajamouli has finally revealed the title of his high-budget and star-studded film with Superstar Mahesh Babu. The project is called Varanasi, and the first glimpse has already impressed everyone with its scale, ambition and visual richness.
However, behind the excitement lies Rajamouli’s biggest test to date.
Varanasi is being made entirely for IMAX, which is one of the most demanding formats in world cinema. This decision has thrilled fans because they will get to experience his filmmaking on large 1.43:1 IMAX screens, which offer the highest level of immersion. At the same time, this choice brings a huge amount of pressure because IMAX requires exceptional precision in every frame.
Varanasi becomes only the second Indian film to be shot completely for IMAX. The first is Nitish Tiwari’s Ramayana, featuring Ranbir Kapoor, Sai Pallavi and Yash. That project is already listed on IMAX’s official release slate and is aiming for a Diwali 2026 release.
This creates a direct challenge for Rajamouli.
Since Ramayana arrives earlier, it will set the technical benchmark for Indian IMAX filmmaking. If it delivers a remarkable visual experience, Rajamouli will have to match or exceed that standard. IMAX is extremely strict in terms of clarity, scale, lighting, VFX and composition. Even small mistakes appear magnified on such screens.
