Thug Life makers fined Rs. 25 lakhs over early OTT release?

Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam’s most anticipated Thug Life became a huge disaster in theatres due to its poor content. During the promotions, Kamal proudly announced that the movie will come on OTT only 8 weeks after its theatrical release.

However, rumors suggest that the film will have an early digital release on Netflix. This move goes against the norm in North India, where a gap of eight weeks between theatrical and OTT releases is usually maintained. Any film that breaches this rule will not be allowed to be released in the National Chains (PVR, Inox, and Cinepolis).

Despite the Hindi dubbed version of Thug Life releasing in national multiplex chains, the makers have opted for an early OTT release, violating the standard industry window. As a result, multiplex chains have reportedly imposed a Rs. 25 lakh penalty on the producers for breaching the agreement.

Additionally, the film’s underwhelming performance has forced a renegotiation of its digital rights, which were initially priced higher but have now been sold at a reduced rate. The Hindi version’s dismal box office run has further added to the makers’ woes.
