Hindi language film Homebound has been selected as the official Oscar entry from India in the Best International Feature Film category. The film, directed by Neeraj Ghaywan, stars Ishaan Khatter, Vishal Jethwa, and Janhvi Kapoor in lead roles.

The movie had its theatrical release yesterday and received positive reviews from critics. According to trade reports, Homebound earned just Rs. 30 lakhs nett on the opening day. Not many are aware of the film, and the lack of a promotional campaign resulted in a poor opening despite the movie featuring noted actors.

Homebound had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival and was also screened at the Toronto International Film Festival. It is inspired by journalist Basharat Peer’s article ‘A Friendship, a Pandemic and a Dwath Beside the Highway.’

The movie showcases the childhood friendship between a Muslim and a Dalit, as they pursue a police job that holds the promise of dignity long denied to them because of their surnames. Hollywood legend Martin Scorsese is the executive producer, while the project is backed by Karan Johar and Adar Poonawalla.
