The recent re-release of Kollywood star Dhanush and Bollywood actress Sonam Kapoor’s 2013 romantic drama, Raanjhanaa, has become controversial for the makers’ decision to alter the film’s climax using artificial intelligence. After Raanjhanaa’s director Aanand L. Rai, it’s the film’s hero Dhanush’s turn to raise objection to the alternate climax.
Dhanush took to X on Sunday evening and shared a painful note with the caption, “For the love of cinema.” “The re-release of Raanjhanaa with an AI-altered climax has completely disturbed me. This alternate ending has stripped the film of its very soul,” said Dhanush, who went on to allege that “the concerned parties” went ahead with it despite his clear objection.
“This is not the film I committed to 12 years ago. The use of AI to alter films or content is a deeply concerning precedent for both art and artists. It threatens the integrity of storytelling and the legacy of cinema. I sincerely hope that stricter regulations are put in place to prevent such practices in the future,” Dhanush tweeted.
Raanjhanaa’s controversial AI-altered climax has a “happy ending,” with Dhanush not dying in the re-released film. The film was a modest success upon its initial release, and it features a soundtrack composed by AR Rahman.
