Story:

In a village named Shankarapalli, a few deaths take place suddenly in a brutal manner. The killers don’t even show mercy on women, and this case poses a serious challenge to the police. Kasi (Varun Sandesh), a constable in Shankarapalli, loses his niece and begins chasing down the mystery. Who is behind the crimes? What is their motive? Did Kasi crack the mystery? The film answers these questions.

Plus Points:

The concept of Constable is quite different from the recent murder mysteries, and this is the best aspect of the film. The scenes that come in this regard are partly engaging. The suspense factor is maintained to some extent, and the twists are passable.

Varun Sandesh delivers a decent performance and excels in the action part. One of the action blocks was so natural, and Varun Sandesh looked pretty good in it. Madhulika looked good, while Bhavyasri did a solid job. The latter did complete justice to her role by neatly portraying all the shades. Duvvasi Mohan was also effective.

Minus Points:

The makers attempted to convey a message laced with crime elements, but the film’s atmosphere and world could have been established better. Except for a few engaging moments, there are many unnecessary sequences that restrict the film’s potential.
It’s also hard to understand why a movie like Constable needed an item song. Moreover, the actress featured in the special number doesn’t quite fit the part. The heroine’s role could have been written much better, as she doesn’t have much prominence in the story. There are also portions where Varun Sandesh could have done better.

A few moments defy logic. For instance, a speech-impaired person is caught and beaten up, yet no effort is made to get a portrait sketch of the killer from him through sign language. Some scenes are written too conveniently, thereby reducing the overall excitement. The screenplay remains predictable for the most part.

Technical Aspects:

The production values are just okay. The music is fine in parts, but the momentum isn’t carried throughout. The cinematography is neat. The editing team should have chopped the item song.

Director Aaryan Subhan couldn’t impress on the whole. He penned a good concept with a neat message, but his screenplay isn’t gripping enough to do justice to his plot. More care regarding the narrative would have done a world of good to the film. Constable is surely a missed opportunity.

Verdict:

On the whole, Constable is a disappointing crime thriller. The flaws outweigh the positives, making the film a tiresome watch. The emotional angle in the revenge plot feels sensible, but the screenplay built around it isn’t impressive. You can skip this film.
