Legendary Tamil actor-director duo Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam’s pan-India action drama, Thug Life, released earlier this month amid sky-high expectations. With Mani and Kamal reuniting after almost 37 years since Nayagan, fans were expecting yet another classic in Thug Life.

However, disappointing the fans of the duo, Thug Life bombed at the box office. The film was panned by critics and movie lovers for its lackluster drama. After two weeks of Thug Life’s release, Mani Ratnam opened up about his film’s failure. In a recent interview, he said that fans expected something different from Thug Life. Mani even apologised to audiences for not meeting their expectations.

“For those who were expecting another Nayakan from the two of us, all I can say is we are sorry. It was never our intention to go back. Why should we? We wanted to do something completely different. I think more than over-expectation, it was another expectation. The audience expected something far removed from what we delivered,” he added. Always known for bouncing back with a blockbuster after a disaster, Mani Ratnam has left Thug Life behind and has already begun scripting for his next movie.
