Disney’s year at the box office has been chaotic. The studio has run into more stumbles than successes, and while Zootopia 2 is racing past the half-billion-dollar mark worldwide, one of its biggest bets is now moving toward its next phase.
Tron: Ares, the long-awaited third film in the cult sci-fi series, crashed harder than any other Disney title this year. Its October release turned into a major setback, with losses estimated at nearly Rs. 1000 crore. Only a few months after its theatrical failure, the film is set to arrive digitally on December 2, 2025.
Here is the twist. This is not an OTT release. Tron: Ares is coming out on video-on-demand (VOD) platforms such as Amazon Prime Video in the rent or buy section, Apple TV, iTunes, YouTube Movies and Google Play Movies. Overseas viewers will have to pay around $20 to $30 to watch it. Indian audiences will not gain much from this round, since it is not part of any subscription service yet. A physical disc release is planned for January 6, 2026, and that window may also bring the OTT debut globally.
The film is directed by Joachim Rønning and stars Jared Leto in the lead role, with Greta Lee, Evan Peters and others taking key parts. The score is composed by Nine Inch Nails. Despite its talent and scale, Tron: Ares turned into one of Disney’s costliest misfires and stands far from the studio’s usual blockbuster run.
