A copyright controversy has recently erupted between the makers of the Malayalam film Lovely (3D) and the team behind S.S. Rajamouli’s Eega (2012). Sai Korrapati, the producer of Eega, has sent a legal notice to the Lovely team, alleging that the CGI housefly in the film is a direct copy of the one from Eega.
While the issue is likely to head to court, the timing has sparked fresh attention. Lovely is now streaming on Amazon Prime Video, although only in 2D format and in its original Malayalam version with English subtitles.
Directed by Dileesh Karunakaran, Lovely was released in theatres on May 16, 2025, including a Telugu version, but it failed to impress at the box office. Now, with the controversy brewing, the film might just get a second chance to find its audience on OTT.
Meanwhile, the director has denied the plagiarism claim, stating that he has technical proof to establish the originality of Lovely’s CGI work. With both sides holding their ground, the housefly controversy appears to be heading to court.
