The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) released a list of 301 feature films that are eligible for this year’s Oscars. Apart from India’s official entry – Chhello Show (The Last Film Show), four other Indian films have made it to the cut, including the sensational and controversial film The Kashmir Files.
The director of the movie Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri expressed his happiness and tweeted, “The Kashmir Files is shortlisted by The Academy for Oscars and is eligible for voting and got nominated amongst 300 films. The voting would take place between Jan 12th to Jan 17th.”
A low number of screens were allocated when the movie was released and with solid word of mouth and rave reviews, the movie became a huge blockbuster in no time and broke several records in Indian cinema. The story centered around the 1990s exodus of Kashmiri Hindus from Indian-administered Kashmir. It depicts the exodus and the events leading up to it as a genocide.
Abhishek Agarwal and Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri together produced the movie that starred Anupam Kher, Mithun Chakraborty, Darshan Kumar and Pallavi Joshi in lead roles. Oscars will announce the final nominations list on January 24, 2023, and the Oscars ceremony will air live on March 12, 2023, from the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.
