Released around a month ago, Bollywood star Ajay Devgn’s Maidaan, a biopic on the legendary Indian football coach Syed Abdul Rahim, ended up being a colossal disaster. The film could barely touch the Rs 50 crore nett mark and is touted as one of the biggest disasters in Ajay Devgn’s career.

In his latest interview, one of the leading Bollywood filmmakers, Boney Kapoor, who produced Maidaan, reflected on the film’s disastrous result. “The subject we chose was fantastic, and the actor (Ajay Devgn) was superb, but somehow we didn’t recognize the demands of the audience. The audiences today want all front-footed action films like RRR, Jawan, and Pathaan,” said Boney Kapoor.

For the past few months, after the humongous success of Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathan and Jawaan and low-budget movies such as 12th Fail, Bollywood has been going through a rough patch. Bollywood distributors and exhibitors are eagerly waiting for the Hindi versions of the big ticket Telugu movies such as Pushpa The Rule, Kalki, Game Changer, and Devara to bail them out.
