After the debacle of Mithra Mandali, Priyadarshi Pulikonda returns with a romantic crime comedy titled Premante. Kayal Anandhi plays the female lead, and the film hits the big screens today. Here is how it fares.
Story:
Madhusudhana Rao (Priyadarshi) and Ramya (Anandhi) marry after liking each other, and life runs smoothly for three months. Things change when Ramya uncovers a shocking truth about her husband. She decides to leave but gives him one final chance. After another incident, she makes a bizarre decision that stuns him. What is that decision? Who is Madhusudhana Rao? And how is head constable Asha Mary (Suma) involved? These questions drive the narrative.
Plus Points:
Priyadarshi slips into a comedic role he handles with ease, and he performs well. His segments work, offering a much-needed bounce back after his previous flop.
Kayal Anandhi begins as a subtle character and gradually turns interesting. Her arc is unpredictable and adds to the story’s progression.
The lead pair is convincing as a couple, and the film starts briskly with happy marriage portions, warm scenes, and sweet bonding.
Suma gets a full-length comedy role and delivers. Vennela Kishore joins her to increase the humour, and their combination works. Other actors are adequate in their roles.
Minus Points:
The plot flows well in the first half with a balanced mix of comedy and romance. The pre-interval twist is handled decently. However, the second half drags with little narrative development, and the scenes do not match the energy of the opening stretch.
The writing lacks depth in the latter half. Several portions feel designed solely to guarantee a happy ending. The climax relies too much on cinematic liberties. The theft sequences do not hold up logically. They entertain, but they do not withstand scrutiny.
At one point, Suma’s comedy track turns repetitive, not because of her performance but because of weak scene writing. Hyper Aadhi and Ram Prasad are underused. The emotional quotient also falls flat and feels forced rather than natural.
Technical Aspects:
Premante marks the feature debut of Navaneeth Sriram. His intentions are clear, but the second-half progression needs sharper writing. With stronger scripts, he can deliver better films in the future.
Production values are decent, and the visuals look good thanks to Vishwanath Reddy’s cinematography. Leon James’ music is pleasant, with the marriage song standing out, although his score feels overbearing in a few places. Editing by Raghavendra Thirun works well in the first half, and the same sharpness was needed later.
Verdict:
On the whole, Premante is a romantic crime comedy that is reasonably okay to watch and offers a fair share of fun moments. The lead pair performs well, and their chemistry adds warmth to the narrative. Vennela Kishore and Suma deliver reliable comic relief that lifts several scenes. However, the uneven second half, limited narrative drive, and underused characters prevent the film from reaching its full potential. It works if you are watching mainly for the comedy, but you will need to overlook the logical gaps and the overly neat conclusion. With moderated expectations, it is an okay watch.
