The Telugu-dubbed version of the Malayalam film Narivetta, starring Mollywood star Tovino Thomas, was released in theaters on Friday (May 30). Check out our review to find out if the film has managed to impress the Telugu audience.

Story:

Varghese (Tovino Thomas) aspires to secure a good government job. He joins the police constable job against his will for his mother and the girl he loves. In the Wayanad region, a police battalion is deployed to evict tribals who have allegedly occupied land by building huts in the forests. What kind of war takes place between the police and the tribals afterward? Did the tribals do anything to the police? What truths does Tovino Thomas learn there? What happens in the end? This forms the crux of the story of Narivetta.

Plus Points:

The movie once again reiterates why Telugu audiences love Malayalam films. A good story combined with fitting performances makes this film appealing to the audience. All the elements that are normally present in a police thriller movie can be seen in this film.

The director’s effort to ensure that the audience does not get bored anywhere is commendable. Even though this effort fails to some extent, his genuine attempt impresses the audience. The audience feels this story, which happened close to reality.

The point that tribals living in forests have no protection in those forests will appeal to the audience. The way the police behaved towards them, what kind of conflicts took place among them, and how one of them eventually revolted are presented quite well.

Minus Points:

This cop thriller also has its minuses. The love track is a major detriment to the film. Although this track helps to move the story forward to some extent, it does not seem to be fully developed. As a result, the track between the hero and heroine does not impress the audience.

The director’s approach to repeatedly taking the audience to flashback scenes is also not impressive. Casting some stars for Adivasis would have helped the proceedings.

Narivetta’s story slows down drastically in the second half. More care should have been taken to pen a riveting screenplay. The pre-climax and climax scenes should have been written more effectively.

Technical Department:

The theme dealt with by director Anuraj Manohar is quite good, and its execution also appeals to the audience. However, the director should have taken care of aspects such as slow-paced narrative. Music is another major asset of Narivetta. Jakes Bijoy’s background score is particularly good. The way he elevated some crucial scenes with his score is impressive. The cinematography is good. However, the editing should have been more impactful. Production values are okay, while the Telugu dubbing is good.

Verdict:

Overall, Narivetta will appeal to an extent to the audience who love cop thrillers. The intense story, fine performances, and electrifying score are the major highlights of the movie. However, the slow pace and boring screenplay in some key sequences have let down this film. Audiences who enjoy good Malayalam thrillers may try this movie once.
