Mission: Impossible—The Final Reckoning (Mission Impossible 8) is the concluding chapter of Tom Cruise’s iconic spy saga. It was released in India a week before its global rollout. Billed as Ethan Hunt’s final mission, the film arrives with sky-high expectations—but does it deliver? Read our review to find out.

Story:

Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) returns with his IMF (Impossible Mission Force) team to stop The Entity, a powerful rogue AI that poses a global threat. Standing in his way is Gabriel (Esai Morales), a dangerous figure from Ethan’s past who seeks control over the AI. In a tragic turn, Gabriel kills Luther (Ving Rhames) to obtain a key element called the “Poison Pill.” As the world teeters on the edge, Ethan is entrusted with one final mission by the U.S. President — to end the chaos once and for all. What follows is a high-stakes, high-octane journey filled with sacrifice, suspense, and spectacle.

Plus Points:

There’s no denying it — Tom Cruise is the heart of the film. His dedication to stunt work remains unmatched. From underwater sequences in a submarine to nerve-wracking aerial maneuvers in a tiny plane, he commands attention throughout. The action is big, bold, and brilliantly choreographed.

Hayley Atwell brings charm and grit to the role of Grace, holding her own beside Cruise. Simon Pegg (Benji) delivers lighter moments that balance the tension, and together, the team’s chemistry works well.

A standout surprise is the return of Rolf Saxon as William Donloe — a callback to the original 1996 film. His inclusion is not just nostalgic but narratively meaningful, adding emotional depth for longtime fans.

Visually, the film is stunning. Fraser Taggart’s cinematography captures every detail of the explosive set pieces, while the score by Max Aruj and Alfie Godfrey heightens key moments with tension and emotion.

Minus Points:

While the action is undeniably thrilling, the storyline lacks engagement. The narrative leans too heavily on spectacle, with the plot often taking a backseat. The pacing, especially in the second half, feels uneven and occasionally sluggish.

The villain, Gabriel, feels underdeveloped despite being central to the plot. His connection to Ethan is hinted at but never explored deeply enough to leave a lasting impact. For a final chapter, a more formidable and complex antagonist would have made a difference.

Additionally, longtime fans might miss the intricate spy tech, tactical missions, and clever strategies that once defined the Mission: Impossible formula. Here, those elements feel dialed down.

Technical Aspects:

Director Christopher McQuarrie ensures the visuals and action remain on point, but the screenplay needed more polish. A tighter runtime — ideally under 2 hours and 30 minutes — and a stronger narrative flow in the latter half would have improved the overall experience.

Fraser Taggart’s camerawork is top-notch, especially in the submarine and aerial sequences. The music effectively supports the mood, though editing could have been crisper to remove some lagging moments. As always with this franchise, the production values are solid and impressive.

Verdict:

On the whole, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning delivers on its promise of high-octane action and visual spectacle. Tom Cruise once again proves why he remains the face of this franchise, bringing unmatched energy and commitment to every frame. Though the story and villain could have been stronger, the film’s emotional moments and nostalgic nods make it a satisfying send-off. If you’re a fan of the series or love adrenaline-pumping spy thrillers, this one’s absolutely worth your time. Don’t miss it — buckle up for one final, thrilling ride with Ethan Hunt.
