Low-budget Tamil film Vaazhai, directed by Mari Selvaraj, sprung a surprise at the ticket windows. Despite no noted faces, the children’s drama became a surprise blockbuster. Vaazhai collected over Rs. 30 crores gross at the Tamil Nadu box office in its lifetime. At the global box office, Vaazhai earned over Rs. 40 crores gross.
Vaazhai’s box office performance is sure to give hope for mid-range or non-star cast films to opt for theatrical release instead of taking the direct-to-digital route. This Tamil blockbuster is now streaming on Disney Plus Hotstar in Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Malayalam, Kannada, Marathi, and Bengali audios along with English subtitles.
Vaazhai hit the screens a week before Thalapathy Vijay’s The GOAT, and hence, its box office prospects were affected to some extent. Had the movie been released during some other time, it would have easily surpassed the Rs. 50 crores gross mark.
Vaazhai stars debutants Ponvel and Raghul in the lead roles, alongside Kalaiyarasan, Nikhila Vimal, J. Satish Kumar, Dhivya Duraisamy, Janaki, Priyanka Nair and Nivedita Rajappan in supporting roles. Santosh Narayanan composed the tunes.
