Small film banks on word of mouth; can paid premieres help?

Paradha, fronted by Anupama Parameswaran, is the only notable Telugu film releasing this weekend. The social drama, directed by Praveen Kandregula, caught the attention of netizens with its thought-provoking trailer. Now, the question is whether that interest will translate into ticket sales.

Anupama went a step further and daringly asked the audience to watch the movie only if the reviews were good. She also claimed that Paradha was the best film of her career. In an interesting move, Paradha makers have planned paid premieres in select theatres.

These special premieres can be both a boon and a bane. If the content clicks, the premiere shows will do a world of good, especially for small films like Paradha. However, if the makers’ confidence does not resonate with the audience, it may do more harm than good by affecting opening-day numbers and occupancies.

The industry is currently going through a terrible phase and badly needs a hit or two to bounce back. Since Coolie and War 2 have also slowed down, there is ample scope for Paradha to make some noise at the box office. Let’s see if that happens. The movie also features Darshana Rajendran and Sangeetha in crucial roles.
