Rajinikanth’s Lal Salaam finally hits OTT with extra footage – But it still misses something important

Over a year after its theatrical release, Aishwarya Rajinikanth’s Lal Salaam has made its way to the digital space. The film, featuring Vishnu Vishal and Vikranth in lead roles with a cameo by Rajinikanth, struggled to connect with audiences in cinemas.

Now streaming on Sun NXT, the film is available only in Tamil and arrives with an unexpected extended version. However, the Telugu version, which also released in theatres, is still missing from the platform with no update yet.

While the digital cut includes additional scenes, it’s unclear whether they enhance the experience or simply stretch an already underwhelming narrative. The film was previously criticised for its lack of emotional depth and weak storytelling, despite strong names like AR Rahman on board.

The Hindi television premiere came and went without much notice, raising the question of whether this OTT release will do any better. With little buzz around its arrival, the film’s second chance might go unnoticed as well.

The supporting cast includes Senthil, Jeevitha, Thambi Ramaiah, Ananthika Sanilkumar, Vivek Prasanna, and Thangadurai. Backed by Lyca Productions and scored by AR Rahman, Lal Salaam had all the right elements on paper, but the execution failed to deliver.

As it streams quietly, the question remains. Can this late digital release spark new interest, or is the film’s moment long gone?
