Everyone enjoys watching movies on OTT platforms without interruptions – and ad-free viewing has long been a key attraction. However, that experience is about to change for Amazon Prime Video users in India.
After rolling out limited advertisements to subscribers in countries like the USA, UK, Japan, and Mexico, Amazon is now set to implement the same in India. Emails have started going out to Indian users, informing them that ads will soon be included in shows and movies.
To continue enjoying an ad-free experience, subscribers will need to pay an additional fee – Rs. 699 per year or Rs. 129 per month – on top of the existing Rs. 1,499 annual subscription or others. These changes will come into effect from June 17, 2025.
The big question now is whether Indian viewers will be willing to spend more for an uninterrupted streaming experience. With illegal streaming already on the rise, this move could pose a significant challenge for Amazon Prime Video in one of its key markets. How the platform responds to user sentiment remains to be seen.
