In a move that may pose a few difficulties for Tamil film producers in getting the state government’s nod for entertainment tax exemption for their movies, the Madras High Court has questioned the state government if giving entertainment tax exemption to U certified movies has improved the standards of Tamil language and culture over these years.

The court further questioned the government why ticket prices of movies that were given tax exemption were not reduced. Taking a stern stand even further, the court sought proper explanation from the government why movies and TV shows that glorify violence cannot be rated A.

It is well-known that since 2006 the Tamil Nadu government is giving tax exemption for movies that have Tamil titles and rated U by the CBFC.
