Director who made one of the best thrillers says he’s tired of the genre

Mollywood filmmaker Jeethu Joseph gained recognition with Mohanlal’s Drishyam, which is regarded as one of the best thrillers in Indian cinema. The film was remade in multiple languages, too. Drishyam 2 captivated audiences as much as the first installment, and now the actor-director duo is gearing up to entertain audiences with the third installment.

However, Jeethu Joseph says he is tired of the genre. At the Manorama News Conclave 2025, the director revealed how thrillers are dominating the Malayalam industry currently. He said, “I’m tired of thrillers. I want to try something new, even if it fails. I’ve made light-hearted films earlier. But once ‘Drishyam’ happened, I was boxed in. Even producers from Telugu and Tamil industries would ask for ‘Jeethu Joseph logic’ in every film.”

Jeethu Joseph made it clear that he is no longer interested in repeating the same pattern since it might bore the audience. The filmmaker added, “I only began shaping a third part after stumbling upon an ending he believed was right for Georgekutty’s family. It carries risks, but this was the direction the story naturally had to take.” Jeethu Joseph expressed his disappointment, stating that he had to write extra pages for Drishyam 3 to get the logic airtight.
