Bombay High Court blocks Bhool Chuk Maaf OTT release – Here’s what happened

The Bombay High Court has ordered a temporary halt on the release of Bhool Chuk Maaf on Amazon Prime Video, following a legal dispute between the film’s producers, Maddock Films, and theatre chain PVR Inox. In an interim order issued on May 10, 2025, the court ruled that the film cannot be released on any platform until the completion of the agreed 8-week theatrical window.

The controversy began after Maddock Films canceled the movie’s theatrical release, originally scheduled for May 9, 2025, and announced a direct digital premiere on May 16, 2025. The producers cited rising India-Pakistan tensions and security concerns, but PVR Inox claimed the decision was a breach of contract and filed a Rs. 60 crore lawsuit, alleging the shift was prompted by poor advance bookings.

With the next hearing set for June 16, 2025, the film’s release remains on hold. Directed by Karan Sharma, Bhool Chuk Maaf stars Rajkummar Rao and Wamiqa Gabbi in a romantic comedy set in Varanasi, featuring a time-loop storyline where the lead character keeps reliving his wedding day.
