Legendary Kollywood actor-filmmaker duo Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam have joined forces with each other after 38 years since the release of their iconic gangster drama, Nayagan. The duo’s highly anticipated gangster drama, Thug Life, is gearing up for its world theatrical release on June 5 amid sky-high expectations.

Thug Life also features star heroine Trisha in a lead role. The film’s recently released theatrical trailer revealed a few glimpses of romance between Kamal Haasan and Trisha. This led to an intense social media debate on the 28-year age gap between Kamal and Trisha. In a recent interview with Mid Day, Mani Ratnam opened up about the controversy surrounding the romance between Kamal and Trisha.

Pointing out that real-life relationships with notable age differences are quite common in the society, Mani Ratnam said that people are attempting to ignore what is happening in the society. He went on to say that such relationships should not be judged differently on screen.

“In real life, there are slightly older people who have relationships with younger individuals, male or female. It is a fact of life. It has been like that for a long time. It’s not just now. When it appears in cinema, we try to find fault with it or pass judgment and insist that it should only be one way,” the auteur told Mid Day. He also urged the audience to see Kamal and Trisha as characters in Thug Life and not as Kamal and Trisha.

Thug Life also features Simbu, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Abhirami, Ashok Selvan, Sanya Malhotra, Joju George, Nassar, Ali Fazal, Pankaj Tripathi, Rohit Saraf, and Baburaj in prominent roles. The film has a soundtrack composed by Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman.
