The Telugu web series Viraatapalem: PC Meena Reporting has recently sparked headlines over a controversy surrounding its origin. The team behind Constable Kanakam has accused ZEE5 of lifting their creative concept and turning it into a complete series without consent. Now streaming on ZEE5, Viraatapalem has drawn attention for reasons beyond its content. But does the show itself offer anything worth that buzz? Here’s our review.
Story:
In 1980, a bride dies mysteriously during her wedding in the village of Viraatapalem. Over the next decade, similar tragedies strike newly married women, leading the villagers to believe they’re cursed. When police constable Meenakshi (Abhignya Vuthaluru) is transferred there, she refuses to accept the superstition. Her investigation leads to a bold and shocking step that rattles the village. Is it truly a curse, or is someone hiding behind it? The series follows Meena’s quest to uncover the truth behind these unsettling deaths.
Plus Points:
Abhignya Vuthaluru, known mostly for her digital presence, takes on a serious role and delivers a relatively okay performance. Amidst a largely dull setup, her effort stands out as a slight positive.
The only other saving grace is the short runtime. With just seven episodes, each under 25 minutes, the series doesn’t drag on, which viewers will be thankful for considering what follows.
Minus Points:
This is where the series completely falls apart. What begins as an intriguing concept turns into a poorly executed mess. The storytelling lacks direction, the tone feels off from the start, and every supposed cliffhanger ends with an awkward freeze frame that feels more like a technical glitch than a suspense beat.
The narrative has no depth. There’s no tension, no buildup, and no emotional connection. Each episode feels like a filler with recycled scenes and flat dialogue. Even the short episodes start to feel long because of how empty they are.
Performances are largely uninspired. Aside from Abhignya, the rest of the cast appears stiff, disconnected, and completely misfit in their roles. There’s no sense of conviction or character. Surabhi Prabhavathi had some scope, but weak writing doesn’t allow her to make any impact. As for Lavanya Sahukara, both her character and performance are forgettable and unnecessary.
The CG is another major letdown. Scenes meant to create fear or intrigue become unintentionally silly due to poor visual quality. Instead of suspense, the visuals spark laughter. It feels like the makers gave up midway through production or never tried hard enough to begin with.
Technical Aspects:
Every craft in this series functions at its bare minimum. Whether it is writing, direction, editing, camera work, or music, none of them show effort or creativity. There’s no atmosphere, no rhythm, no imagination. The background score only worsens the situation by playing in loops, often completely out of sync with the emotion of the scenes. Overall, it feels like a checklist was ticked off just to finish the job.
Verdict:
On the whole, Viraatapalem: PC Meena Reporting is a textbook example of how a decent concept can be dragged down by clueless writing, lifeless performances, and carelessly stitched episodes that lead absolutely nowhere. With no grip on suspense, emotional weight, or visual sense, the series feels like it was made on autopilot. The only tolerable aspects are Abhignya’s mildly decent effort and the thankfully short runtime, but even those can’t hide how dull, disjointed, and disconnected this show truly is. If you are thinking of watching it, do yourself a favour, scroll past, forget it exists, and spend your time on something that actually values it.
