Gram Chikitsalay is the latest Hindi web series created by The TVF Media for Amazon Prime Video. As it comes from the makers of the hugely popular Panchayat series, it naturally carries decent expectations. But does it meet them? Let’s find out in our review.

Story:

Dr. Prabhat Sinha (Amol Parashar), a young and talented doctor from Delhi, has been appointed as the medical officer at an abandoned PHC in the village of Bhatkandi. Weeks pass with no patients visiting, and his staff remains uncooperative. The series follows whether Dr. Prabhat can treat at least one patient and gain the villagers’ trust.

Plus Points:

The rural setting immediately feels familiar, reminiscent of Panchayat, and sets the stage for a slice-of-life story.

Amol Parashar fits his role well and performs fine. He is supported by Anandeshwar Dwivedi and Akash Makhija, who add depth to the story. Garima Vikrant Singh’s portrayal of Indu, a significant character, is another strong point, handled with sincerity.

Minus Points:

While director Rahul Pandey starts off with promise, the direction soon becomes sluggish, and the story loses its direction. Creators Deepak Kumar Mishra and Arunabh Kumar, who succeeded with Panchayat, fail to recapture that magic here. The writing by Vaibhav and Shreya feels weak, and the dialogues lack impact, making the story feel flat.

Though the series tries to bring in emotion, it arrives too late to resonate, leaving the audience already disengaged. The first two episodes hold promise, but by the end, the storyline shifts in a way that feels disconnected.

Akansha Ranjan’s presence is wasted, as her scenes offer little substance, especially compared to Vinay Pathak, who plays another doctor and ends up having more of a presence. These casting choices don’t help elevate the show.

Technical Aspects:

Visually, the series does well to capture the rural atmosphere, providing an authentic feel. The score is adequate but unremarkable. However, the editing is a major flaw. The pacing is slow, and despite the shorter runtime, the series feels stretched due to its meandering storyline. Director Rahul Pandey’s handling of the material could have been stronger, as the lack of tight narrative control further weakens the show.

Verdict:

On the whole, Gram Chikitsalay falls short of expectations, ultimately becoming a tedious watch. While the setting and performances show promise, the weak writing, lackluster direction, and uneven execution make it a forgettable experience. If you’re looking for something entertaining, this one may not be the right pick.

So, continuing the series of reviewing movies and shows during the lockdown period, our today’s pick is the Hindi web series Special OPS. The show is available on Disney-Hotstar and let’s see how it is.

What’s it about

Himmat Singh(KK Menon) is a RAW officer who feels that there is a sixth terrorist behind the Indian parliament attacks that happened in 2001. All the five were killed but Himmat feels that there is a sixth person and for this, he forms a team of five who are undercover all over the world to track this attack. The series is an espionage thriller based on the Indian government’s acts to catch this terrorist and how all this unravels is the basic story of this web series.

What’s good?

KK Menon is a terrific actor and he proves it once again with this series as he is amazing as the RAW office who masterminds the search operations. The series is co-written by star director Neeraj Pandey and he sets the story well in various countries. The initial episode is good as it shows how the governments deal with such situations. The last three episodes are quite racy and have the needed twists of an espionage thriller.

The way secret agents live their life and how they go to any extent for the country has been showcased well. The production values of the show are top-notch and create a good watching experience. Karan Tacker does a fine job as agent Farooq and looks dashing throughout the series. The detailing gone into this thriller is quite good

What’s bad?

After an interesting first episode, the story dips in the next three episodes. Too much time is wasted in the backstories of KK Menon which has no connection to the story at all. The story is dragged to no extent and many logical errors keep erupting in. The chemistry between Karan Tacker and Sana just buzzes out and doesn’t appeal much to the viewers.

The transition between the past and present isn’t swift enough as the screenplay is not that gripping. Neeraj Pandey, who is a master with thriller does not get it completely right with his writing here as it has many loopholes.

Final Word

Overall, Special OPS is an espionage thriller from the production of noted director Neeraj Pandey. His story has a decent premise and good performances but the dull narration in the middle episodes keeps you bored. If you sit through this, the last three episodes are quite gripping and have good twists and still make up a decent watch.

So, continuing the series of reviewing movies and shows during the lockdown period, our today’s pick is the new Hindi Zee 5 original film Chintu Ba Birthday. Let’s now see how it is.

What’s it about?

The film is set in 2004. Chintu(Vedant Chibber) and his family of five move to Iraq illegally in search of a better life. But things turn upside down because of the deadly situations in the country. Amidst all this, the family forgets to celebrate Chintu’s birthday. Chintu’s father(Vinay Pathak) promises his son that next year, he will surely hold a solid celebration. A year passes by and when Chitu’s birthday comes, the family lands into all sorts of problems. How do they overcome it and celebrate Chintu’s birthday is the whole film all about.

What’s good?

Vinay Pathak is superb as Chintu’s father. The way he keeps all his problems aside and deals with his son’s happiness, the actor has showcased it beautifully till the end of the film. There is a scene where the 6-year-old kid explains the downfall of Saddam Hussain. It is the best scene in the film. How illegal immigration causes problems and how American soldiers are stuck in Iraq for years, all this is showcased so well in the movie.

Seema Pawha who plays the nagging mother in law is also good. The emotions work big time in this film as the small-time relationships in middle-class Indian families have been showcased well. production values of the film as just about okay but the camerawork and BGM are good.

What’s bad?

The story of the film is simple and does not have any twists or turns. It is quite simple with its narration and moves at its own pace even though it is 77 minutes long only.

Final Word

Overall, Chintu Ka Birthday has a unique premise and some very well-written screens. It deals with bonding in a family and how one makes sure to keep others happy even in a deadly situation like war. Barring the simple story, this film is an endearing watch and will surely impress you during this lockdown period. Go for it.
