Gangers is a Tamil action drama starring Sundar C, Vadivelu, and Catherine Tresa in lead roles. Written and directed by Sundar C himself, the film has made its OTT debut on Amazon Prime Video and is also available in Telugu. Here’s our review to know how the movie is.

Story:

Sujitha (Catherine Tresa), a school teacher, raises a complaint about a missing student. When the police ignore her plea, she escalates the matter to the DGP, who assigns the case to an undercover officer. Saravanan (Sundar C) joins the school as a PT teacher, working alongside Singaram (Vadivelu), another PT instructor. The school, owned by Malaiyarasan (Mime Gopi), is involved in illegal activities, and Saravanan soon becomes a roadblock in their path. But Saravanan has a deeper mission. Who is he really? What is he after? And does he share a history with these criminals? The film unpacks these layers.

Plus Points:

After the success of Madha Gaja Raja, Sundar C returns with a film that blends comedy and heist elements, and it works to a fair extent.

He delivers a restrained performance without going over the top. Catherine Tresa plays her part well and makes her presence felt within her limited scope.

The standout, however, is Vadivelu. His trademark timing and quirky expressions bring in consistent laughs. He elevates several scenes and adds much-needed energy to the film.

Supporting actors like Munishkanth, Bagavathi Perumal, and Mime Gopi do justice to their roles and contribute to the film’s narrative strength.

Minus Points:

The story follows a formulaic path. For those familiar with comedy-heist dramas, there’s not much novelty here. Sundar C relies on a tried-and-tested format, which might feel repetitive.

Catherine’s character, initially respectable, is oddly placed in a bar song sequence. While clearly intended for fan service, it feels disconnected and doesn’t align with her character’s profession as a teacher.

While Vadivelu’s comedy mostly works, a few scenes feel forced and don’t land as intended. With better writing, these moments could’ve had more impact.

The second half sees a noticeable dip in pace. The initial engagement fades as the film begins to drag. Tighter editing and a stronger narrative push could have helped maintain momentum.

Technical Aspects:

Sundar C is decent in all his roles – as writer, director, and actor. However, the script lacks freshness and could have used more impactful twists to keep the audience guessing.

The cinematography by Krishnasamy, music by Sathya, and editing by Praveen Antony are functional, but none stand out in particular. The production values are decent, making the film visually neat.

Verdict:

On the whole, Gangers is a heist-comedy that works in parts. While Sundar C keeps the narration moving and Vadivelu brings in the laughs, the routine storyline, few unnecessary scenes, and a lack of surprises hold the film back. Watch it if you’re in the mood for something light, but keep your expectations modest.

After a 12-year wait, Vishal’s Madha Gaja Raja was released in Tamil during Pongal and became a super hit. Today, the movie is released in its Telugu-dubbed version. Check out the review to know how it is.

Story:

Madha Gaja Raja (Vishal) is an easygoing man who falls in love with Madhavi (Anjali), but their relationship ends quickly. Later, at a wedding, Raja reconnects with his childhood friends and learns that they are all facing serious problems. He discovers that businessman Kakarla Vishwanath (Sonu Sood) is the cause of their troubles and decides to confront him to resolve the issues he created. What happens next? What problems do Raja’s friends have with Vishwanath? What becomes of Raja’s love story? Does Vishwanath harm Raja too? Find out in the full movie.

Plus Points:

Vishal delivers a decent performance, making his role acceptable. Anjali and Varalaxmi Sarathkumar add a touch of glamour to the film.

Santhanam’s comedy provides some relief, with his witty punches working well. The other actors perform adequately in their respective roles.

Minus Points:

The film’s story is simple but lacks engagement. The pacing is slow, making it feel even duller. Being a 12-year-old film, its narrative feels outdated. Had it been released when it was made, it might have been a blockbuster.

Some of Santhanam’s jokes feel forced and futile. The film also suffers from inconsistencies in storytelling. Scenes related to friendship could have been portrayed better.

Sonu Sood’s character is written like a typical old-school villain, adding nothing new. The film lacks a strong conflict to keep the audience engaged, and the hero-villain face-off scenes fail to make an impact.

Anjali and Varalaxmi Sarathkumar are minimally important in the story. It would have been better if they had been given substantial roles with more scope for performance.

Technical Aspects:

On the technical front, the film is below average. The editing is poor, and the cinematography is unimpressive. Vijay Antony’s music is passable but not memorable. The production values are average, while Sundar C’s writing and direction are just okay. Additionally, the Telugu dubbing fails to create engagement.

Verdict:

On the whole, Madha Gaja Raja is a mediocre action-comedy that offers Vishal’s decent performance and Santhanam’s comedy as its only highlights. However, the film lacks freshness, relying on a routine storyline with a weak screenplay and subpar technical aspects. If you enjoy comedy without focusing much on the story, you may give it a try, but keep your expectations low.
