National Award winning actress Keerthy Suresh’s new film Revolver Rita hit theaters today in Tamil and Telugu. The crime comedy is directed by JK Chandru. Here is our review.

Story:

Dracula Pandiyan (Super Subbarayan) is the most feared don in Pondicherry. A gang sets out to kill him. During the execution, Pandiyan slips into Rita’s (Keerthy Suresh) house and dies after a brief clash. Once the family discovers who he is, they try to get rid of the body, and the gang that planned his murder starts chasing them. Meanwhile, Dracula Bobby (Sunil), the don’s son, begins to track down his missing father. The rest of the story follows how the family tries to escape the situation and cover up the mess.

Plus Points:

Keerthy Suresh handles the central role reasonably well and pulls off a few scenes neatly. Radhika, who plays her mother, tries to lift the film with her innocent humour and manages to bring out a few laughs.

Ajay Ghosh and Redin Kingsley try to lighten the mood and some of their bits work. The remaining characters offer very little.

Minus Points:

The plot is the main weakness here. It follows a routine formula and lacks any fresh or standout moments in both halves. Audiences have seen this kind of story long ago and expecting thrills from this setup is unrealistic. Pacing becomes another hurdle. The first half moves along, but the second half drags and stretches the narrative unnecessarily, which creates boredom.

The characters are poorly written and the director fails to use the cast effectively. Keerthy gets no meaty material that adds anything to her stardom. Sunil’s role is wasted and his villain track goes nowhere. Redin Kingsley could have added more spark if he had enough room. John Vijay turns up in another routine part that adds nothing to the story.

Technical Aspects:

Writer and director JK Chandru does not make full use of his cast. He picks a dated storyline and narrates it without anything new to lift it. Dinesh B. Krishnan’s cinematography is serviceable. Sean Roldan’s music does not add much. Editor Praveen KL could have tightened the film by cutting down several needless scenes. Production values are adequate.

Verdict:

On the whole, Revolver Rita is a disappointing crime comedy that brings nothing new to the table. The film wastes a capable cast, especially Keerthy Suresh, on a mediocre story with no thrills or grip. The slow pacing, weak engagement, and flat characters turn it into a forgettable outing. Skip it and there are far better options in theaters and on OTT to watch this weekend.
