A small budget film named ‘Kanya Kumari’ is now out in theatres and it caught the attention of cinephiles when Madhu Shalini came forward to present it. Geeth Saini and Sreecharan Rachakonda played the lead roles. Let’s see how it is.

Story:

Kanya Kumari (Geeth Saini) dreams of making it big in life. Her goal is to become a software engineer, but with hardly any financial support from her family, she ends up working as a salesgirl in a shopping mall. On the other hand, Tirupati (Sreecharan Rachakonda) has been attached to agriculture since childhood. He is head over heels for Kanya Kumari, but she does not accept his love as her ambitions are different. Despite her rejection, Tirupati continues to pursue her. What happens next forms the crux of the story.

Plus Points:

As the title suggests, the entire movie revolves around the female lead, whose characterization is the film’s biggest asset. To top it off, Geeth Saini delivers a superb performance as a village belle. She plays a character who expresses her thoughts without any reservations and wants to stand on her own. As Madhu Shalini hyped, the actress fits the bill naturally and adds great value to the film with her Srikakulam diction and body language.

Despite being a debutant, Sreecharan Rachakonda played his part with confidence. As someone immensely passionate about agriculture, he delivered his lines neatly. His chemistry with the leading lady also worked well.

Some fun moments are passable and manage to evoke a few decent laughs. The film has the right intentions, aiming to convey that everyone has the right to live life on their own terms. It also touches upon themes of women’s independence and the challenges they continue to face even in the 21st century. Bhadram and others did decent job.

Minus Points:

The conflict between the lead pair is good and has ample scope to elevate the drama and add emotional weight to the proceedings. However, it is introduced too late in the narrative. The protagonist takes up a job only to later realize that he should pursue what he is truly good at. This realization also comes rather late, making the final act feel rushed with too many developments hurriedly wrapped towards the end.

The first half could have been much better, as very little happens in terms of story progression. Certain aspects are oddly presented. For instance, the hero’s efforts to woo the female lead are compared to steps in agriculture which comes across as bizarre and out of place.

Some plot developments also feel conveniently written, diluting the impact of an otherwise good storyline. Had these elements been included more effectively in the first half, the overall impact would have been stronger. Despite a runtime of just 135 minutes, the film feels stretched at times, and the editing team could have done a better job. The ending isn’t satisfactory without a proper closure.

Technical Aspects:

Music director Ravi Nidamarthy did a fine job and a couple of songs were very good on the big screens. Shiva Gajula and Haricharan K’s visuals are fine and so are the production values. As mentioned earlier editing required more finesse.

Srujan Attada is the writer, producer and director of Kanya Kumari. He penned a good storyline but his direction is both a hit and miss. While there are some genuinely good moments, the dragged first half and bizarre sequences take away from the film’s effectiveness, restricting its appeal to only a limited section of the audience. Also, the ending feels complete with no proper resolution.

Verdict:

On the whole, Kanya Kumari is a rural romantic drama with the right intentions, but the narrative doesn’t completely do justice to the storyline. Geeth Saini leaves a very good impact, while Sreecharan Rachakonda makes a confident debut. Despite some good moments here and there, the film doesn’t strongly convey what it intends to, as the dragged first half, bizarre sequences, and incomplete climax leave it far from satisfactory.
