Sisu, released in 2022, was a sleeper hit that encouraged the makers to attempt a sequel titled Sisu: Road to Revenge. It was released today in theaters in English, Telugu and a few other languages. Check out the following review to know how it is.

Story:

Set in 1946, after World War 2, Finnish ex-commando Aatami Korpi (Jorma Tommila) crosses into Karelia, now under the Soviet Union, to dismantle his old home and take it back to Finland. His crossing angers the Red Army, and a deadly hunt to take him down begins under the command of Igor Draganov (Stephen Lang). What happens next and who survives this violent pursuit is what the film showcases on the big screen.

Plus Points:

The biggest relief is that this does not feel like a forced sequel. The continuity is clean and the setup remains intact. Aatami Korpi shines again with his silent, cold and stealth-driven approach to action.

Stephen Lang is decent in his role. Choosing him as the antagonist is a strong casting decision that adds presence to the film.

The major attraction is the new set of action designs. The makers deliver enough fresh combat ideas to keep audiences engaged. The action works best when the lead characters face each other.

Minus Points:

The film suffers because it lacks a solid storyline. The makers depend entirely on action to carry the narrative. Even that segment is not executed convincingly. Viewers will naturally question what could possibly kill the protagonist when he survives multiple certain-death situations.

The action ideas are new but not as impactful as those in the first film. Many moments feel unintentionally funny rather than gripping.

The emotional side of Aatami, and the pain he carries, could have been explored at least through short flashback scenes, but it is ignored.

The climax is routine and weak. The stunts here fail to create tension or excitement and instead drain the final moments of any curiosity.

Technical Aspects:

The runtime is a bliss since this routine action drama wraps up in about 90 minutes. Coming to direction, Jalmari Helander, who also wrote the film, focuses almost entirely on action and spends no time on story development. It feels like the sequel was made simply to cash in on the success of part one. Better writing or more inventive action sequences could have made this a satisfying ride.

The cinematography by Mika Orasmaa, the score by Tuomas Wainola and the editing by Juho Virolainen are passable. The production design is neat and the art team deserves credit for recreating the period setting effectively. The Telugu dubbing feels like those Telugu-dubbed English movies from the early 2000s.

Verdict:

On the whole, Sisu: Road to Revenge is another routine action film that has some new action ideas but little else. Apart from the lead performances and the strong production design, nothing stands out. If you loved the first film, this one is likely to disappoint you. There are far better options available in cinemas and on OTT.
