Dhanush has once again returned to the director’s chair with Idli Kottu (Idly Kadai). The film hit the screens today and let’s see how it is.

Story:

Shiva Kesavudu (Rajkiran) runs a small idli shop in Shankarapuram, which means the world to him. However, his only son Murali (Dhanush) dreams of a city life filled with comfort and luxury. After completing his hotel management studies, Murali becomes a partner in the AFC food empire led by Vishnu Vardhan (Sathyaraj) in Bangkok. Impressed by Murali’s sincerity and hard work, Vishnu Vardhan decided to get his daughter Meera (Shalini Pandey) married to Murali. But an unexpected incident forces Murali to return to his hometown. The rest of the story is about how Murali fulfilled his father’s dream.

Plus Points:

Idli Kottu has a simple storyline but some emotional moments in both halves have been handled very well. Dhanush is at his usual best in this rural entertainer and delivers a natural performance. His portrayal in the emotional sequences is sure to strike a chord with the viewers. Nitya Menen is pretty good as Dhanush’s love interest and the duo once again shared a neat chemistry.

Arjun Vijay and Samuthirakani play the antagonists and they did a neat job. While Arun Vijay impressed as the ego-driven rich guy, Samuthirakani lends ample support to the narrative playing Dhanush’s nemesis in the village.

The dialogues for the Telugu version work well with references to popular movie dialogues. Ilavarasu’s comic timing and dialogue delivery are enjoyable, while Rajkiran is impressive as Dhanush’s father and brings emotional depth to the narrative. Shalini Pandey and Sathyaraj play their parts well and shine in the climax. Parthiban was good too.

Minus Points:

As Dhanush repeatedly kept saying, Idli Kottu has a very simple storyline that is reliant on its emotional moments. Someone who expects a solid and layered plot might get disappointed as the narrative moves along the expected lines for the most part.

The pacing is slow for the most part and to enjoy the film one must ignore this aspect. While the first half offers decent moments, the graph dips after the halfway mark. The initial moments of the latter hour lean into a hero-villain template conflict. This is where the film goes offtrack and loses its grip for a significant period.

The rich–poor conflict is age-old, and the message the film conveys about not forgetting one’s roots and parents’ love may remind audiences of earlier films, which can affect the viewing experience sometimes.

Technical Aspects:

G.V. Prakash Kumar’s songs are decent, but his background score brings a pleasant feeling enriching the impact of emotional moments. Cinematographer Kiran Koushik nicely depicts the country-side visuals. The editing aligns with the director’s vision.

The production values are good, and the action sequences are well-crafted by Peter Hein. Dhanush’s direction works in parts. While he handles the emotional aspects well, the second half could have been much better instead of drifting into the commercial zone.

Verdict:

On the whole, Idli Kottu is a slow-paced family entertainer that has its moments. The emotional scenes in the first half work, but the second half falls into a typical hero–villain conflict, which brings down the impact. Dhanush and the others perform well, but as mentioned earlier, the familiar storyline and the underwhelming second half make Idli Kottu just an okay watch.

NEEK OTT Release Date

Youthful entertainer Nilavuku Enmel Ennadi Kobam (NEEK), directed by versatile actor Dhanush, has clashed with Dragon at the box office. After Pa Paandi and Raayan, Jabilamma Neeku Antha Kopama (Nilavuku En Mel Ennadi Kobam in Tamil) marks the third directorial venture of Kollywood star Dhanush. Starring a relatively young cast, this youthful romantic comedy was released in cinemas today. Check out our review to know if the film has managed to entertain the Telugu audience.

Story:

Prabhu (Pavish Narayanan), a middle-class young man, dreams of becoming a chef. He gets heartbroken and loses interest in marriage after his breakup with his rich girlfriend Neela (Anikha Surendran). But destiny has different plans for Prabhu and he falls for his school friend Preethi (Priya Prakash Varrier). However, Prabhu still can’t forget his ex, and more drama unfolds when he receives an invitation to Neela’s wedding. Will he attend the wedding? Why did Prabhu and Neela part ways? Who marries whom in the end? Watch the movie in cinemas to know the rest of the story.

Plus Points:

Dhanush has taken enough care in making Jabilamma Neeku Antha Kopama appeal to young audiences with his direction and engaging storytelling. Apart from the love story, he also handles beautiful emotions like friendship quite well. The comedy scenes are executed well and provide decent entertainment. Certain scenes in the second half are edited in a way that connects well with the Telugu audience. The film also features a few mass scenes that appear during the climax, and Dhanush fans will have a gala time in cinemas.

The way Dhanush portrayed friendship, love, and breakups in several sequences is a major highlight of the movie. Among the actors, Pavish Narayanan delivers a commendable performance. His acting skills in single-take scenes are praiseworthy. He also impresses with his dialogue delivery and dance moves.

Young actress Anikha also makes an impact with her gorgeous looks and performance. Mathew Thomas, who played Pavish’s friend, is brilliant in his character that delivers a lot of comedy. Ramya Ranganathan is another beautiful actress who impresses the audience despite a limited screen time. Senior actors Sharanya Ponvannan, Aadukalam Naren, and Sharath Kumar perform their roles meticulously, adding depth to the movie. Priya Prakash Varrier and Priyanka Arul Mohan make special appearances in the film.

Minus Points:

The film lacks a strong storyline, and the core plot feels routine. Dhanush chooses a familiar storyline that doesn’t feel very fresh or engaging. The narrative leaves the audience asking for more at several places. The film lacks freshness as several scenes were handled with the typical template that was seen in several rom-coms in the past, thereby diluting the overall experience. Adding to this, GV Prakash Kumar’s soundtrack fails to leave a lasting impact, and even the background score feels quite functional. While the lead actors perform well in certain moments, there’s definitely room for improvement in key emotional scenes.

Technical Aspects:

The film has some solid production values. Dhanush presents the film quite well technically. He displays his directorial prowess in several scenes, including the execution of songs. GV Prakash Kumar disappoints with an underwhelming score. The visuals by cinematographer Leon Britto are pleasing, while editor GK Prasanna’s cuts are just about okay.

Dhanush previously made Raayan without a strong story but still managed to engage the audience. He does the same with Jabilamma Neeku Antha Kopama. Although it’s a routine love story, Dhanush’s direction keeps the audiences engaged for the most part. Dhanush succeeds in making the youths connect with the film’s storyline and lead actors, making for a decent experience on the whole.

Verdict:

Jabilamma Neeku Antha Kopama is a routine yet entertaining romantic comedy. Dhanush chooses a simple story and brings it to life with an engaging screenplay, keeping the young audience engaged for the most part. Barring a few predictable scenes, the film is likely to be enjoyed by young audiences this weekend.
