Arjun S/o Vyjayanthi is the latest Telugu emotional action drama, starring Nandamuri Kalyan Ram and veteran actress Vijayashanti in crucial roles. Pradeep Chilukuri directs this film, which hit the big screens today amidst decent expectations. Read our review to find out how the film fares.

Story:

Set in Vizag, Arjun Vishwanath (Kalyan Ram) is the son of an honest IPS officer, Vyjayanthi (Vijayashanti). She dreams of seeing her son become an IPS officer like her. When everything seems to be going well, an unexpected situation separates them. Vyjayanthi cuts Arjun off from her life, and in the meantime, he turns into a criminal who protects the people of Vizag. Enter Pathaan (Sohail Khan), a man seeking revenge against Vyjayanthi. Who is Pathaan? Why does he want to kill Vyjayanthi? Why does Vyjayanthi abandon her son? Why does Arjun become a criminal? Do mother and son reunite? The film unfolds the answers to these questions.

Plus Points:

Although the story is familiar, the way it’s handled is commendable. The screenplay moves neatly, making the film feel pleasing despite its foreseeable plot.

Kalyan Ram delivers a solid performance as Arjun, a son who deeply cares about his mother’s safety. His action scenes are well-executed and add weight to his character.

Vijayashanti gets a meaningful role and performs it perfectly. Her emotional and confrontational scenes with Kalyan Ram are compelling.

The action sequences are stylish and will appeal to fans of the genre. The twist in the climax adds an interesting layer to the narrative.

Supporting actors like Animal Babloo, Srikanth, and Sohail Khan do a decent job within the scope of their characters.

Minus Points:

While the director succeeds in presenting a routine story decently, stronger emotional depth and better dialogues could have made the film more impactful.

Some scenes, in both halves, feel over the top. Trimming such sequences could have improved the film’s overall flow and realism.

There are noticeable logical loopholes. For instance, a scene where a character reaches the shore by holding onto a piece of cloth tied to a boat feels unrealistic. Several such moments exist in the name of cinematic liberty. If you can overlook them, the film remains enjoyable.

Saiee Manjrekar’s character is underwritten and adds little to the narrative. Her role could have been developed with more depth. The songs are passable but lack the impact of being memorable.

Technical Aspects:

Director Pradeep Chilukuri does a fine job in presenting a routine story with decent narration. However, a sharper focus on emotional writing and dialogues would have elevated the film.

Srikanth Vissa’s screenplay is decent. Ram Prasad’s cinematography is visually pleasing, and Thammiraju’s editing is crisp. The runtime is well-balanced. Production values are decent.

Ajaneesh Loknath’s music works well for the most part, though some tracks feel reminiscent of popular scores, which is a slight drawback.

Verdict:

On the whole, Arjun S/o Vyjayanthi is a watchable emotional action drama that stands out for its lead performances by Kalyan Ram and Vijayashanti. While the storyline is familiar, its execution keeps it watchable. Some emotional scenes could have been better written, and a few exaggerated moments might not work for everyone. But if you’re someone who enjoys action films with a touch of emotion, this film is worth a watch this weekend.

Box Office Report: Tollywood's dry spell continues

Box Office Report: Tollywood's dry spell continues

March 2025 saw a flood of releases at the Tollywood box office, but only two films – Court: State Vs A Nobody and MAD Square – managed to strike a chord with audiences and make money. The rest struggled to leave a mark.

April hasn’t changed the narrative so far. The first week passed quietly, with no notable successes. The second week, however, saw four prominent films hit theaters: Jack, Good Bad Ugly, Jaat, and Akkada Ammayi Ikkada Abbayi. Here’s a look at how they fared.

JACK:

Siddhu Jonnalagadda’s Jack, released on April 10, 2025, followed the success of Till Square, the sequel to DJ Tillu. Directed by Bommarillu Bhaskar, this spy action drama had moderate expectations. However, it fell flat from day one, collecting around Rs. 2 crore share so far. The film has been a disappointment for everyone involved.

GOOD BAD UGLY:

Tamil star Ajith Kumar’s Good Bad Ugly, produced by Mythri Movie Makers, marked their debut in Tamil cinema. It opened to a massive response in Tamil Nadu and collected around Rs. 100 crore alone in the state. Also, it became one of the highest-grossing films of Ajith overseas.

However, its Telugu release suffered due to a lack of promotion. Many didn’t even know the film had hit screens in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Despite its success in Tamil, it failed to connect with the Telugu audience.

JAAT:

Directed by Gopichand Malineni, Jaat marked his foray into Bollywood with Sunny Deol in the lead. Released only in Hindi, it opened to mixed reviews and earned Rs. 49 crore nett in India and Rs. 58 crore worldwide within five days. However, the movie failed big time overseas, with negligible collections. With Akshay Kumar’s Kesari Chapter 2 around the corner, sustaining momentum could be a challenge.

Though the film was made by a Telugu director and production house, it found no traction in Telugu states, and there was no official word about a Telugu-dubbed version from the makers.

AKKADA AMMAYI IKKADA ABBAYI:

This small-budget comedy drama Akkada Ammayi Ikkada Abbayi starring Pradeep Machiraju and Deepika Pilli hit screens on April 11, 2025. Despite having moments of fun, the absence of big names worked against it. With limited visibility and minimal promotion, it remained under the radar and failed to register at the box office.

Upcoming Releases: Can They Revive the Box Office?

After weeks of underwhelming performance, two new releases offer hope for Tollywood.

ODELA 2 (April 17, 2025): This supernatural thriller features Tamannaah Bhatia and is directed by Ashok Teja. The trailer has generated strong buzz, and the genre gives it the potential to perform well – if the content clicks with audiences.

ARJUN S/O VYJAYANTHI (April 18, 2025): This emotional action drama stars Nandamuri Kalyan Ram, with Vijayashanti in a pivotal role. Directed by Pradeep Chilukuri, the film has caught attention with its intense trailer. If the emotional beats land, it could deliver a solid opening.

CONCLUSION:

Tollywood has had a slow start this April, with most movies failing to do well at the box office. Except for Court: State Vs A Nobody and MAD Square in March, no film has made a strong impact in terms of collections.

Now, all hopes are on Odela 2 and Arjun S/o Vyjayanthi. Both films have created good buzz, and if audiences like them, they could bring big numbers and much-needed success. Tollywood needs a hit to bring crowds back to theaters. Let’s see if this weekend can finally change the box office story.

Arjun Son Of Vyjayanthi

Nandamuri Kalyan Ram’s last couple of films didn’t get the desired response at the box office. He will be next seen in the action drama, Nandamuri Kalyan Ram’s last couple of films didn’t get the desired response at the box office. He will be next seen in the action drama, which marks his 21st film. Yesteryear actress Vijayashanthi plays a pivotal role as an IPS officer. Pradeep Chilukuri, who earlier made a film called Raja Cheyyi Vesthe, is the director.

NKR21 is Arjun Son of Vyjayanthi, and from the title, it is clear that the film will be high on the mother-son sentiment. The title announcement was dropped today on the occasion of Women’s Day. Also, the makers unveiled a solid poster depicting Kalyan Ram and Vijayashanthi in solid avatars. The social media post of the makers read: “Every woman nurtures a son. Vyjayanthi IPS nurtures an army called Arjun.”

Vijayashanthi has been very choosy regarding films lately. As she is part of this Kalyan Ram starrer, we can expect something big. Arjun Son of Vyjayanthi features Bollywood actor Sohail Khan as the antagonist. Saiee Manjrekar plays the female lead. Muppa Venkaiah Chowdary, Sunil Balusu, Ashok Vardhan Muppa, and Kalyan Ram are jointly bankrolling the project.

Srikanth and Animal Prithiveeraj are playing key roles. Ajaneesh Loknath, of Kantara fame, is the film’s music composer. The shoot is progressing at a brisk pace, and once the filming is done, the makers will announce the release date.
