Mammootty’s Bramayugam

Mammootty’s Bramayugam

Mammootty’s folk-horror film Bramayugam has scored a big international moment. The movie has been picked for a special screening at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles on February 12, 2026. It’s part of a programme called “Where the Forest Meets the Sea: Folklore from Around the World,” and Bramayugam is the only Indian film included in this lineup, which is a huge deal for Malayalam cinema.

The film first released in February 2024 and immediately grabbed attention for its atmospheric black-and-white visuals and the unsettling tone Rahul Sadasivan created. Mammootty’s performance as Kodumon Potti was one of the highlights, and the story, about a folk singer who ends up in a creepy old manor, stayed with many viewers long after the credits rolled. Arjun Ashokan, Sidharth Bharathan, and Amalda Liz also added a lot to the film.

Even though it wasn’t a giant commercial film, Bramayugam performed well and slowly grew through word of mouth and OTT viewership. The film’s unique take on folklore and horror made it stand out among other releases that year.

With this LA screening and Mammootty recently winning another Kerala State Film Award for his role, Bramayugam continues to travel far beyond its original release. It’s nice to see a rooted, experimental Malayalam film getting this kind of global spotlight.
