After facing back-to-back failures, Bollywood actor Aamir Khan made a strong comeback with the feel-good sports comedy-drama Sitaare Zameen Par. The movie directed by RS Prasanna earned over Rs. 160 crores nett in India, something that seemed impossible before its release. Globally, the movie collected nearly Rs. 260 crores gross.
Post-pandemic, it has been a tough road for feel-good films, but the Aamir Khan starrer exceeded expectations and performed well. Today, the Bollywood star held a press conference in Mumbai to make it clear that Sitaare Zameen Par will not be released on any OTT platform. Instead, the movie will be available exclusively on the actor’s YouTube channel ‘Aamir Khan Talkies’ from August 1. However people need to pay Rs. 100 to watch the film.
The theatrical window is six weeks. Sitaare Zameen Par will also be available in other countries like the USA, Canada, UK, Australia, Germany, Singapore, and Spain, with pricing tailored for each market. Aamir firmly believes that releasing the film on YouTube at an affordable price will help his film reach a wider audience.
This is definitely an unconventional and bold move from Mr. Perfectionist, and it remains to be seen how the audience will respond to the pay-per-view model. Sitaare Zameen Par is a spiritual sequel to Aamir’s memorable flick Taare Zameen Par. Genelia Deshmukh played the leading lady.
