Box Office Report: Tollywood's dry spell continues

Box Office Report: Tollywood's dry spell continues

March 2025 saw a flood of releases at the Tollywood box office, but only two films – Court: State Vs A Nobody and MAD Square – managed to strike a chord with audiences and make money. The rest struggled to leave a mark.

April hasn’t changed the narrative so far. The first week passed quietly, with no notable successes. The second week, however, saw four prominent films hit theaters: Jack, Good Bad Ugly, Jaat, and Akkada Ammayi Ikkada Abbayi. Here’s a look at how they fared.

JACK:

Siddhu Jonnalagadda’s Jack, released on April 10, 2025, followed the success of Till Square, the sequel to DJ Tillu. Directed by Bommarillu Bhaskar, this spy action drama had moderate expectations. However, it fell flat from day one, collecting around Rs. 2 crore share so far. The film has been a disappointment for everyone involved.

GOOD BAD UGLY:

Tamil star Ajith Kumar’s Good Bad Ugly, produced by Mythri Movie Makers, marked their debut in Tamil cinema. It opened to a massive response in Tamil Nadu and collected around Rs. 100 crore alone in the state. Also, it became one of the highest-grossing films of Ajith overseas.

However, its Telugu release suffered due to a lack of promotion. Many didn’t even know the film had hit screens in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Despite its success in Tamil, it failed to connect with the Telugu audience.

JAAT:

Directed by Gopichand Malineni, Jaat marked his foray into Bollywood with Sunny Deol in the lead. Released only in Hindi, it opened to mixed reviews and earned Rs. 49 crore nett in India and Rs. 58 crore worldwide within five days. However, the movie failed big time overseas, with negligible collections. With Akshay Kumar’s Kesari Chapter 2 around the corner, sustaining momentum could be a challenge.

Though the film was made by a Telugu director and production house, it found no traction in Telugu states, and there was no official word about a Telugu-dubbed version from the makers.

AKKADA AMMAYI IKKADA ABBAYI:

This small-budget comedy drama Akkada Ammayi Ikkada Abbayi starring Pradeep Machiraju and Deepika Pilli hit screens on April 11, 2025. Despite having moments of fun, the absence of big names worked against it. With limited visibility and minimal promotion, it remained under the radar and failed to register at the box office.

Upcoming Releases: Can They Revive the Box Office?

After weeks of underwhelming performance, two new releases offer hope for Tollywood.

ODELA 2 (April 17, 2025): This supernatural thriller features Tamannaah Bhatia and is directed by Ashok Teja. The trailer has generated strong buzz, and the genre gives it the potential to perform well – if the content clicks with audiences.

ARJUN S/O VYJAYANTHI (April 18, 2025): This emotional action drama stars Nandamuri Kalyan Ram, with Vijayashanti in a pivotal role. Directed by Pradeep Chilukuri, the film has caught attention with its intense trailer. If the emotional beats land, it could deliver a solid opening.

CONCLUSION:

Tollywood has had a slow start this April, with most movies failing to do well at the box office. Except for Court: State Vs A Nobody and MAD Square in March, no film has made a strong impact in terms of collections.

Now, all hopes are on Odela 2 and Arjun S/o Vyjayanthi. Both films have created good buzz, and if audiences like them, they could bring big numbers and much-needed success. Tollywood needs a hit to bring crowds back to theaters. Let’s see if this weekend can finally change the box office story.

Sunny Deol Jaat movie collections

Sunny Deol Jaat movie collections

Jaat, the much-anticipated action drama, marks the first-ever collaboration between Bollywood powerhouse Sunny Deol and Tollywood hitmaker Gopichand Malineni. Released on April 10, 2025, the film opened to mixed reviews but has been holding its ground commercially.

While the initial chatter around the film has been divided, Jaat is proving to be a crowd-puller at the box office. The Hindi-only release passed its first Monday with flying colours, aided by the partial public holiday for Ambedkar Jayanti.

The film raked in an impressive Rs. 7.30 crore nett on Monday alone – a strong number considering the natural weekday drop. With this, its total collection has inched close to Rs. 48 crore nett, and it will cross the Rs. 50 crore milestone today. Meanwhile, the movie has crossed Rs. 58.2 crore at the global box office. However, the overseas collections are not as impressive, making the movie a somewhat underwhelming experience internationally.

All eyes are now on how the film performs through the week and into the weekend. With Akshay Kumar’s Kesari Chapter 2 set to release in just three days, the competition is about to heat up. The next few days will be crucial for Jaat to maximize its earnings before the box office battlefield gets crowded.

Backed by People Media Factory and Mythri Movie Makers, Jaat also stars Ramya Krishnan, Jagapathi Babu, Regina Cassandra, and Randeep Hooda in key roles. The music, composed by Thaman, adds further punch to this action-packed entertainer.

Chhaava, Court Streaming on Netflix

Chhaava, Court Streaming on Netflix

Almost 3 weeks ago, Netflix delivered back-to-back superhits (Dragon and Officer on Duty) that entertained home audiences, and now, it’s all set to repeat the magic this Friday. The OTT platform is bringing two theatrical blockbusters to its digital library, offering viewers a powerful lineup for the weekend.

The first is a small film that made a big noise at the box office – Court: State vs. Nobody. With a modest cast including Priyadarshi, Harsh Roshan, Sridevi Apalla, and Sivaji, the film managed to pull in over Rs. 56 crore and more, proving that strong content always wins. What makes it even more noteworthy is the backing of actor Nani, whose support gave the film a wider reach.

Directed by debutant Ram Jagadeesh, the film explores the sensitive subject of the POCSO Act, sending a hard-hitting message to those who misuse power. It’s not just a courtroom drama but a socially relevant story that resonates. The film will be streaming not only in Telugu but also in several other Indian languages, expanding its audience and impact.

Joining it on Netflix is the historical blockbuster Chhaava, a film that created ripples across theatres with its grand storytelling and emotional depth. Vicky Kaushal delivers a powerful performance as Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, capturing both the strength and sacrifice of the legendary Maratha warrior.

Rashmika Mandanna plays his queen with grace, while Akshaye Khanna impresses as the cold and calculating Aurangzeb. Director Laxman Utekar brings history to life with stunning visuals and stirring drama, making Chhava not just a film but an experience. It will be available to stream in Hindi tonight on Netflix. Although a Telugu version was released in theatres, there’s no official update yet on its OTT release, but it is expected to premiere tonight.

With both these impactful films arriving on Netflix, your weekend watchlist is set. Whether you’re in the mood for courtroom intensity or historical valour, these movies offer entertainment with meaning. Both are family-friendly, thought-provoking, and perfect for a binge-watch session that leaves you with more than just popcorn memories. Don’t miss out – settle in and enjoy two of the year’s biggest hits from the comfort of your couch.
