Coolie, fronted by Superstar Rajinikanth and directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, has emerged as the top Kollywood grosser for North America premieres, and that too through advance sales alone. The film has now unlocked a staggering new milestone in this territory.
According to the distributor, the premieres gross crossed the $3 million mark. Despite having late-night premieres, unlike most South Indian releases, the biggie still managed to post phenomenal numbers. Traditionally, the USA hasn’t been as strong a market for Tamil films as it is for Telugu ones, but Superstar’s huge following has changed that.
Breaking Coolie’s premiere record in North America will be nearly impossible anytime soon. The gangster action drama kicked off its first day in the region on a thunderous note, with collections estimated at around $1 million. Given the mixed talk it will be interesting to see how the movie fares in the long run.
