Murder mystery thriller Maargan headlined by Vijay Antony has hit the screens today. Let’s see to what extent the film entertains audience.

Story:

A series of murders in Hyderabad shakes the Police Department, prompting them to assign the case to ADGP Dhruva (Vijay Antony). Dhruva suspects Aravind (Ajay Dhishan) to be behind the killings. However, as the investigation progresses, he uncovers some shocking truths. What did Dhruva discover about Aravind? Who is the real killer, and what is their motive? The film unfolds the answers to these questions.

Plus Points:

The core element typically found in crime mystery thrillers is presented in a unique manner. The way Ajay Dhishan’s character is crafted will strike a chord with the audience, and the variations in his role serve as the film’s biggest strength.

Vijay Antony delivers a composed performance as an investigating officer. His look is sure to impress moviegoers. The reason behind his unique appearance is kept as a suspense element in the first half, and this aspect works well.

The emotional sequences involving the father-daughter and brother-sister relationships are well-executed. The gripping narrative in the second half, along with the twists at the interval and climax, leaves a strong impression.

Minus Points:

Vijay Antony’s performance was good, but the way his character was written is disappointing. Especially in the flashback portions, his role feels underwhelming. Additionally, Samuthirakani is wasted in an insignificant role.

Ajay Dhishan’s role also loses impact as the film approaches its conclusion. The love track in the first half and a few lag moments in the latter half hinder the narrative and may bore the audience.

Though the climax twist is good, the way the film ends falls flat and fails to pack a punch. The killer’s motive could have been written better. The film maintains a serious tone throughout, and the makers could have included some entertaining elements to balance it out.

Technical Aspects:

Though director Leo John’s story is unique, his presentation feels routine. Despite designing Ajay Dhishan’s role well, Leo John gives an ordinary conclusion to his character, which is highly disappointing.

Leo John also serves as the editor, but he could have done a better job with the first half. Vijay Antony’s music and S. Yuvaraj’s cinematography are impressive. The VFX work is well-executed, while the production values are just okay.

Verdict:

On the whole, Maargan is a crime investigative thriller that doesn’t leave a lasting impression. While the story has a unique premise, its presentation feels routine. The first half is dull, whereas the second half is comparatively better. Overall, the film will not appeal to fans of crime thrillers.
